Kimo-Yes or Kimo-No?

I just finished reading the book Memoirs of a Geisha and boy was it good!  I’d seen the movie a couple of years ago, but hadn’t thought about reading the book until I happened upon some kimono (fun fact – “kimono” is both the singular and plural form of the word) on Pinterest and thought that it might be a good blog topic.

If I haven’t mentioned it already, I love Target.  LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, Target.  A couple of years ago, I found, tried on and bought several kimono tops from Target (although they aren’t anything like the traditional kimono in Memoirs of a Geisha)…they’re like cardigan cousins, so how could I resist?  I wore them a couple of times, but they were just so loose and floaty around the arms that it drove me nuts…they’d get stuck in doors, end up smeared in whatever I was eating from reaching across the dining table, and while they did cover some of my arms, I would get chilly from time to time.   Plus, since they’re open in the front and I styled them with tank tops, I was worried that I’d forget to suck in my gut at some point and have my rolls out for all the world to see.  I even started referring to them as “kimuumuus” because, to me, they started to feel more like big, shapeless sacs (like the muumuu below; ironically sold by Saks!) than they did kimono.

MuumuuI’m such a hoarder, though, because even though I’d fallen out of love with my kimuumuus, I didn’t toss them.  The prints on my kimuumuus were just so pretty, and I’m a huge sucker for print.  From time to time, I’d visit them in my closet, think about wearing them and then chicken out.  They’d always make their way to the donate pile when I’d clean out my closet and then miraculously end up back on hangers and tucked neatly away.  I just couldn’t part with them.

Well, I’ve started seeing more kimonos/kimuumuus over the past year or so, so I thought I’d give them another try once the weather started warming up.  To psych myself up enough to wear them, I decided to canvas Pinterest boards to see how others were styling their kimonos.  Here are some of my favorite images (click on the images below to see sources):

They’re so versatile, don’t you think?  They’re great, too, for covering up areas that we may not be super thrilled about – for me it’s my upper arms and shoulders, as well as my caboose.  I love that you can wear them with both skinny, boot leg AND bell bottom jeans, to the beach as a coverup, or with a romper.  So adorbs!  With this Pinsperation in mind, I decided to give my kimono another go:

Blue Kimono

Kimono from Target (old – see list below for shops selling kimono), earrings from Charming Charlie (similar here), necklace from Target (similar here), tank top from Old Navy, shoes from Payless, jeggings from Levi’s.

Coral Kimono

I think I may start wearing these more often.  They’re so comfy!  Now I just need to figure out how to keep the sleeves out of my food and away from closing doors!  If you’re interested in trying the trend, you can find some kimono here – Forever 21, Target, A’Gaci, Urban Outfitters, and Wal-Mart.

I hope you take a chance on the kimono!

Take care,

  1. Terrific post, Buff. I love your new Urban Outfitter shoes. Did you have those in Ft. Worth? Love the butterscotch color and the texture. I am going to break out my spring clothes this weekend to include my kimuumuus, which also look cute with maxi dresses! Love how the kimono kept climbing back in your closet. They deserve to be a part of your regular wardrobe. Love you.

    • Thanks, mom!!! They’re actually old shoes… They’re supposed to be nude/tan, but my camera likes to make everything more saturated for some reason.. Which is also why my top looks red and not coral! Great suggestion about the maxi dresses!!! Love you!

  2. Hi Lauren! You look adorable in those kimono…good call on keeping them. I’m wearing mine for the first time today and I laughed, because everything you’ve said is very relatable! Great post!

    • Hi Lindsay! Thanks for reading! I completely agree with you – the floaty airiness makes them look fresh, while keeping me fresh in this crazy-humid Texas weather! So glad you liked the post. 🙂 🙂

  3. LOVE kimonos on other people but not sure I can pull it off… especially with the baby belly right now, I’d likely look like a parachute, lol! But you, my dear, look super cute in them!

    • Awww!!! I’m SURE you’d look fabulous in them, Shaunacey!!!! You look great in everything. Thank you so much for reading my blog! We’re thinking about starting a family soon, so I will definitely turn to you for pregnancy fashion tips!

    • YAY! Thanks for reading, Brenny. They’re everywhere…you may be able to pick some up whenever you go to Target or Wal-Mart. The ones I had last weekend were from Target. Love you!
